VALORANT: Riot Games reveals the number of accounts banned for cheating in recent years

Riot Games has announced that over the past four years, more than 3.6 million accounts have been banned in VALORANT due to cheating activities. Since the game’s launch, this translates to an average of one account being banned every 37 seconds.

Cheating prevention is led by the Vanguard system, a security tool developed by Riot to maintain the integrity of matches in the first-person shooter (FPS). According to the company, only 1% of games involve cheaters, and these players are usually detected and banned within six matches.

Additionally, Riot has recently implemented Vanguard Restrictions, a new security layer that prevents cheaters from exploiting Windows features like TPM (Trusted Platform Module) and VBS (Virtualization-Based Security) to manipulate the game. These features make it harder to alter system settings fraudulently.

How Vanguard works

Vanguard not only detects and bans direct cheaters, but it also targets activities like botting (using bots for automatic advantages), boosting (players paying others to improve their accounts), and players intentionally queuing with cheaters.

Vanguard’s actions can be categorized into three main areas:

  1. Automatic detection: Identifying and banning accounts based on cheat software detection.
  2. Hardware: Suspensions applied to repeat offenders, identified through their hardware.
  3. Manual review: Bans determined by Riot agents after thorough reviews of suspicious behavior.

Vanguard on Console

With VALORANT’s release on consoles, Riot is facing new challenges, particularly regarding input spoofing devices that allow players to connect a mouse and keyboard to consoles for an unfair advantage. Since the console beta launch in June 2024, Riot has detected and banned several cheaters exploiting these loopholes.

As the game’s popularity grows, the number of bans has increased, reflecting both the expanding player base and Riot’s commitment to keeping competition fair.
