Riot Games has officially announced that VALORANT will migrate to Unreal Engine 5. This news was confirmed by Anna Donlon, the game’s studio head, during the Unreal Fest 2024. According to Donlon, the switch is necessary as the game has reached the limits of Unreal Engine 4, which has powered it since its release.
“We’ve squeezed every drop out of Unreal Engine 4, and now it’s time to move to UE5,” said Donlon. She emphasized that this transition won’t be easy, especially since VALORANT is a live service game, which requires extra caution to maintain stability during the migration. However, she believes this change is crucial for the game’s future.
Unreal Engine 5, launched in 2022, introduces significant technological advancements. These include virtualized geometry, which allows for more detailed environments without compromising performance, a new real-time global illumination system, and more advanced tools for animation and physics simulation. While these features open up possibilities for future innovations, Donlon stated that, initially, players should not expect any major visual or performance changes in VALORANT.
“We don’t expect any immediate changes to the look or gameplay of VALORANT,” she mentioned. However, she hinted at potential new experiences in the future, suggesting that the migration could unlock exciting developments within the game. “Perhaps we’re working on something I can’t talk about yet, but UE5 definitely opens up interesting possibilities,” Donlon teased, fueling speculation about possible expansions to VALORANT’s universe.
Currently, the game runs on Unreal Engine 4.27, and the transition to UE5 is set to be a significant milestone in VALORANT’s ongoing development.
Impact on Player Connection
With the technological leap brought by the new engine, players also need a stable connection to fully enjoy VALORANT’s potential. Issues like high ping, latency, low FPS, lag, packet loss, jitter, and disconnects can negatively affect the experience, no matter how advanced the graphics or gameplay become. This is where NoPing comes in as the perfect solution.
NoPing helps reduce ping, improve latency, and increase FPS. It also resolves issues with packet loss and jitter, ensuring a smoother gaming experience without unexpected disconnects.
