In the early hours of Wednesday, August 21st, Riot Games officially announced a series of significant changes for the competitive scene of VALORANT in 2025. These updates were shared through a video on the game’s social media channels, featuring Leo Faria, Global Head of VALORANT Esports, and Anna Donlon, VALORANT’s Studio Lead.
Key Announcements
The 2025 season will introduce several notable changes, particularly to the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT). Here are the highlights:
- Increased Slots for Ascension: The number of teams competing in Ascension will increase from 11 to 12, with the tournament scheduled for September 2025.
- More Challengers Tournaments: To bridge the gap between the end of the 2024 season and the start of 2025, additional Challengers tournaments will be held in October.
- Academy Teams: Partner teams in the VCT can now establish Academy teams to compete in Challengers. However, these Academy teams will not be eligible for Ascension.
- Eventful Off-Season: The off-season will feature a variety of events, including showmatches, open tournaments, influencer competitions, and Invitationals, such as RedBull Home Ground, Ludwig x Tarik, and Spike Nations.
- Two Masters Events in 2025: There will be two editions of VALORANT Masters in 2025. The first will take place in Bangkok between February and March, while the second will be held in Toronto in June.
- Qualification for Bangkok Masters: The Bangkok event will introduce a new qualification format. Twenty teams will compete in a double-elimination bracket, with the top two securing their spots.
- Toronto Masters: The qualification for the Toronto event will be based on Stage 1, where the top three teams will earn their places.
Champions 2025 Format
The 2025 Champions tournament will have a regional slot distribution, with four slots per region. These slots will be filled by the top two teams from Stage 2 and the top two teams with the most Champions Points, bringing the total to 16 teams. Champions Points will be awarded across all competitions, and performance in Stage 1 will not affect Stage 2.
Tixinha Questions the Changes
After the new format was leaked, caster Guilherme “Tixinha” Cheida expressed his doubts and concerns about the proposed changes. He shared his opinions on social media, sparking discussion within the community.
Additionally, Riot confirmed the locations for upcoming editions of the Champions tournament: in 2026, the event will be held in China, while the 2027 tournament will take place in a country in the Americas.
